Yes, some people can stay in Brazil for longer than 3 months!
I’ve met lots of travelers who wanted to stay, but gave up because they couldn’t find information in English. So I wrote this very comprehensive free guide!
The information in this article was taken from the following Government’s page in July 2024: https://www.gov.br/pt-br/servicos/prorrogar-estada-no-brasil

Requirements
- a Passport or valid Identity document*
- you must have entered the country as a Tourist (not a student or professional)
- you must do this procedure at least 2 weeks before the end of your limit time
*Mercosur residents who entered the country with a National ID don’t need a passport
These documents may (or not) be required by the officer:
- a document proving that you have a place to stay (like a hotel reservation or a local friend’s address and contact)
- a document proving that you have the money to stay (like your bank account balance or your credit card limits)
- a return flight or bus ticket
I strongly suggest doing this proccess while in a big city, because it’s gonna be difficult to find an office in remote areas or countryside towns.
Step 1: Make sure you’re allowed to prorrogate stay
Not all countries are allowed to prorrogate stay, so:
- Enter this page: https://www.gov.br/mre/pt-br/assuntos/portal-consular/vistos/quadro-geral-de-regime-de-vistos-para-entrada-de-estrangeiros-no-brasil
- Open the second link on that page, named “Entry Visas to Brazil (QGRV) – English Version”
It’s going to open a PDF file, where you have check the countries table to make sure your country doesn’t have a * symbol at the VIVIS column, because that means you can’t prorrogate your stay.
As of July 2024, people from these countries can’t prorrogate stay:
- Albania
- Austria
- Belgium
- Bulgaria
- Cyprus
- Czech Republic
- Denmark
- Dominica
- Estonia
- France
- Georgia
- Germany
- Greece
- Hungary
- Italy
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Luxembourg
- Macedonia
- Malta
- Montenegro
- Netherlands
- Slovenia
- Sweden
- Switzerland
- Ukraine
Don’t continue this process if your country is not allowed, it’s gonna be a waste of money and they won’t refund you!
People from these countries can only stay for 180 months and must wait another 180 before re-entering Brazil.
Step 2: Fill the requirement form
The requirement form is available on the link below, and you can change the language to English, French or Spanish:
https://servicos.dpf.gov.br/agenda-web/formulario/23
Filling the form is easy, but consider that:
– the Filiation fields refers to your parents and you can choose “No filiation”
– the Zip code has to be Brazilian (I suggest using your hotel’s zip code)
After filling the form, press the “Save” button, then pess “Schedule service”, and proceed to the next step.
Step 3: Schedule the service
You’re gonna have to schedule a visit to the nearest Federal Police station:
- press the “I’m not a robot” captcha
- select the state where you are
- select the nearest city
- when choosing the “Service Station”, prefer the ones named “PAE”, “DPF” or “DELEMIG”, because these offices are more prepared to talk to foreigners
- choose a date
- press “Schedule”
*If you need to cancel or change the location of your appointment, you must do it on this page: https://servicos.dpf.gov.br/agenda-web/
Step 4: Fill the payment form
As of July 2024, the visa prorrogation costs R$ 110.44, but before paying that you must fill the GRU form from the Federal Police Department, on this link: https://servicos.dpf.gov.br/gru2/gru?nac=1&rec=9
Fill the form with the following information:
CPF/CNPJ: don’t fill unless you have a CPF (it’s optional)
Nome:* your full name
CEP:* your hotel’s zip code
Endereço:* your hotel’s address (should be automatic after ZIP code)
Bairro:* your hotel’s neighborhood (should be automatic after ZIP code)
Cidade:* your hotel’s city (should be automatic after ZIP code)
País de nacionalidade:* your citizenship’s country
Email: your e-mail (optional, but important)
Nome da mãe:* your mother’s name
Nome do pai: your father’s name (optional)
Observação: any observations you consider important (optional)
Código Receita STN:* enter 140090, press the 🔍 button and choose the second option (“94 – Pedido de prorrogação do prazo de entrada”)
Remember:
Only the fields with the * symbol are mandatory.
This form is also used for many other services, so it’s important to enter the correct code in the last field. (Código Receita STN)
Step 5: Pay for the Service
Usually, there are 3 payment methods: Credit Card, Boleto or PIX, but sometimes only the Boleto option is available and that means you have to pay in a local bank.
If you have a Brazilian friend, it’s easier to just ask them to pay for you by PIX, which is the fastest method. This is how you proceed to the payment:
- At the end of the GRU form, press “Pagar”
- If the Credit Card (Cartão de Crédito) or button is not available, press “Baixar GRU” to download the payment PDF file and take it to a bank or a friend who can pay that for you
If you paid it in a bank (with a Boleto PDF), it takes up to 2 days to process the payment. The other options are instantaneous.
Final Step: Show up at the office
At the scheduled date, you should go to the selected Federal Police station with the required documents (and I also suggest printing any confirmation e-mail they sent you).
It’s a very simple process where they’ll give you a new stamp, but consider that the front desk officer may not speak English and that they’re not used to this procedure, since very few tourists request to stay longer than 3 months.
So be patient, and if you can’t speak any Portuguese, bring a translated explanation of what you need to be done, or take a Brazilian friend with you.
