If you stay in Brazil long enough, you’ll probably get angry when you realize that most services and online shops require you to have a CPF number.
Sometimes you can’t even buy a bus ticket without a CPF.
In this article, I’ll teach you how to get one!

What is the CPF?
It’s the Brazilian Tax Payer ID, it has no maintenance costs, it never expires, and it allows you to do things such as opening a bank account and buying from online shops with discounted prices.
Step 1: Register yourself
First, you must register to the CPF system at this website: https://servicos.receita.fazenda.gov.br/Servicos/CPF/InscricaoCpfEstrangeiro/default.asp
Fill the form with the following data:
IDENTIFICAÇÃO
Motivo preenchimento: your full name
Nascimento: your birth date
Documento: select “Passaporte” if you entered the country with a passport, “Identidade” if you entered with your national ID and the other options if you’re an immigrant
Nacionalidade: your country of citizenship
LOCALIZAÇÃO
(the red fields are only for people who reside in Brazil)
País de residência: the country where you reside
CEP: the ZIP code from your Brazilian address
Município: the Brazilian town where you reside
UF: the Brazilian state where you reside
Logradouro: the road where you reside
Número: the number of your house
Complemento: optional additional information
Bairro: your Brazilian neighborhood
CONTATOS
E-mail: your main e-mail
The phone numbers are optional:
DDI*: your house phone’s country code (if not a Brazilian number)
DDD: your house phone’s area code (if it’s a Brazilian number)
Telephone: your house phone number
If you have mobile phone number, fill the information below:
DDI*: your mobile phone’s country code (if not a Brazilian number)
DDD: your mobile phone’s area code (if it’s a Brazilian number)
Celular: your mobile phone number
*if your country code is not available, just insert it in the DDD field
- Press “Enviar” at the end of the form
- You’ll see the following screen:

As explained in the image above:
- Copy the “Cód. de Atendimento” and save it on your phone
- Press “Preparar página para impressão“ to open a pop-up window
- Press “Imprimir“ and save this receipt as a PDF
- Print the receipt
Now you have 90 days to show up to the office carrying your passport and your printed receipt.
To find an office in your area, open Google Maps and search for “Delegacia da Receita Federal” or “Agência da Receita Federal“.
Every big city or mid-sized city has one of these offices, but keep in mind that the officers will probably NOT speak English, so you should go with a Brazilian friend or use some kind of translating app to write everything down.
They’ll probably give you a CPF number right away, and send the document to an address you provide. (like your hotel)
